SCG Parapet LED Installation
QMS SPORT
QMS Sport is Australia’s largest content provider of integrated digital media solutions, engaging millions of sports fans across multiple codes and venues around Australia. In 2018 they were contracted to upgrade the parapet signage at the SCG, one of Australia's most iconic venues and the scene of some of our most memorable sporting moments.
CID was responsible for the enormous task of installing almost 1km of LED signage on parapets around the ground in under 6 weeks. Working closely with QMS Sport personnel, our team of experienced designers, engineers and installation technicians, completed installation works on time and on budget, bringing the SCG to the forefront of digital technology.
Project Scope and Timeline
CID was required to install 978 LED panels around the SCG, spread across 8 parapet lengths in 4 major stands. Each LED panel is 1000mm x 900mm and weighs 35kg.
The timeline was incredibly tight with installation works to be carried out between the end of the AFL season and the start of the Cricket season. This allowed under 6 weeks for installation, certification and commissioning of all panels.
Documentation and Design
Detailed site inspections were initially carried out in conjunction with review of plans and drawings of each stand. Individual parapets were then drawn in 3D CAD and custom brackets and mounting details were designed to suit their specific requirements.
Photo-realistic renders of each parapet solution were produced in conjunction with engineering drawings for final sign-off prior to commencement of works.
Certification and Safety
From initial site survey to final inspection of installation works, CID's Structural Engineer was heavily involved in the project to check and certify that all works complied with the relevant Australian Standards.
CID also worked closely with SafeWork NSW and accredited Height Safety Specialists during project planning to ensure all work methodology was compliant with relevant codes of practice.
Innovative methodology
With an extremely tight deadline CID had to 'think outside the box' in devising an innovative installation methodology that improved efficiency and safety for our installation technicians.
Custom installation tools were developed for each parapet to assist with alignment and pre-fabrication of components was done at CID's assembly facility to expedite works onsite.
Overcoming challenges
Each parapet posed its own unique challenges to our installation technicians in terms of access and condition of the existing structure.
CID implemented a wide range of different access equipment, including mobile scaffolding, EWPs, and ropes, in addition to custom tools and componentry, in order to overcome these challenges.
Global Exposure
Installation works were successfully complete in November, 2018, within our deadline and budget.
Since completion millions of spectators around the world have already experienced the spectacular display from the LED panels, with domestic and international fixtures, including Test Match and ODI cricket, already being played at the ground.
